The best part is the Browns' front office is going to let the players pick the interim coach. "OK, guys, who !&%$ less: Campo or Robiskie?"
Also, this today from Nick:
QUOTE
Pioli has been a hot name floating around the GM rumor mill this season, but he reiterated yesterday that he will fulfill his contract with New England at least through the 2006 draft, even though he can, under rules set by the Commissioner's Office, leave for a job that gives him decision-making power. In doing so, he may be forgoing as much as twice as much money in salary.
OK, so he hasn't, like, SAID, he wants to go. But the rumor mill is smokin'. And look how easy it would be for him to walk!!!!

QUOTE(Thats History Pal @ Nov 29 2004, 11:52 AM)
BB returns to Cleveland - that in itself make it a fun game. Cleveland media are reporting that Davis may be fired this week.
QUOTE
The Toledo Blade decided that the Browns "showed plenty of life" and that Davis "delayed his exit". The Plain Dealer's Bill Livingston grumpily doesn't seem to be able to figure out what it means. The Canton Repository's Todd Porter, one of Davis' toughest critics over the last several months, watched the same game and feels that it indicates that the Browns head coach has lost the team.
If Randy Lerner has reached the same conclusion as Porter, it would likely mean that an interim head coach is in our very near future. In fact, Channel 19's Kendall Lewis is first to the gate with "sources" telling him that Davis will be canned on Tuesday (thanks for the tip, Dave!). Keep in mind that WOIO said this last week as well.
Then add the
Scott Pioli-watch, it should be an interesting Media week here and in Cleveland.

A couple of years ago the NFL began requirng all teams to identify one "decision maker" - i.e. the person the runs the football operations. For NE it is BB. If Pioli was offered a job where he would be the designated decision maker then it would be an upgrade position and he would be allowed to walk away from his NE deal.

You would think that someone like Dakota, who has been listening and calling sports radio for years, would have some semblance of what is out of bounds, and how to skirt the edge of the envelope.
The METCO incident didn't actually get anyone fired, but it is a good object lesson of where NOT to go. I know we complain about how inappropriate much of the programming we listen to seems to be, but the hosts still have a pretty good idea of how to skirt arround things that might put their jobs in jeopardy. Most of the time, anyway. Many hosts do have a quick trigger finger in getting rid of callers who are crossing the line.
Dakota should know all this stuff, yet he can't even make it as a "host" for a few weeks without feeling the bite of the axe. If you're a caller and you say something totally out of bounds, you get cut off and you can then hang up the phone and go back to whatever useless thing you were anonymously doing before you dialed the number.

Mailbags......FROM THE FUTURE!
QUOTE
Q. Nick, thanks for the great work on the mailbag! I read last weekend that Scott Pioli wants to stay in New England at least through 2006. As a Pats fan, I think that's great, but what is he thinking? Why wouldn't he want to go somewhere else and run his own team? He'll never get any credit in New England as long as Belichick is here. Plus, it will be a lot more money! Doesn't he have a responsibility to his family to earn as much as he can? Nick, what's the rest of the story? - Ken, Worcester
A. Ken, a veteran NFL observer who happens to have the cubicle next to mine thinks that Belichick has brainwashed Pioli into staying in New England as a thinly veiled shot at Pioli's father in law, Bill Parcells. Pacells is very close with his daughter and is concerned about her financial security, which will never be all it can be as long as Pioli is working for the frugal Patriots. Even with all of his success, Belichick is very jealous of Parcells, and controlling the mind of his former mentor's son-in-law is no doubt very alluring to Belichick. Makes sense to me.

According to Felger, it sounds like there's a discrepancy between the language of Pioli's contract and league rules.
Isn't the point supposed to be "moot"?? Of course this issue cannot speak!!!
QUOTE
The decision also avoided a potential contract dispute with Pats ownership. The Pats believe that language in Pioli's contract prevents him from taking a GM job with another team because he is considered a ``high-ranking team official.'' However, other teams believe Pioli would be available because he is not the Pats' final decision-maker (see coach Bill Belichick [news]).
By withdrawing his name for consideration, the issue is probably mute.

I too had an issue with the substitutions.
Not sure if Perkins ran over Doc's dog, but his lack of playing time is puzzling. I can only assume that Rivers' apprehension in playing Perkins against Orlando is more based upon matchups. But when your team is leading by 20 points for nearly the entire 2nd half, Perkins has got to get some time on the court.
