Small ball backfired on the Sox twice yesterday but benefitted them once. It's a percentage play, and the case against it is often overstated.
2 of the top 3 AL teams in Stolen Bases are in the playoffs, and 3 of the top 6 in the majors. If Boston or NY miss the playoffs, only 1 of the top 5 in OBP in the majors will make it. Plus, a team with almost the same stolen base success/failure profile as this year's ChiSox won the World Series two years ago in the 2003 Marlins.
Sox steal another base. When it really counts, they're going to try some small ball tactics. New York has let up the 2nd most steals in the majors this years, so it makes sense to try.

Um...so you are saying the Sox or Yankees will miss the playoffs because of their offense?

I think it has its place. But they're going against a Cleveland team that can't hit recently. Not that Ozuna is a particularly good hitter, but essentially giving up the at bat when you had a chance at a big inning might not be the best timing.
Wakefield.

It was nice of Buck to recap everything we missed while these jackasses were making us watch the other game. I wonder if even he gets annoyed at these things.

I know. And should Stanton/Myers come in right now and face the next 2 lefties, that would be a benefit. But then if the game gets closer later on, you only have 1 more available for either Matsui or Giambi. The Yanks would presumably hit for Tino late in a close game.
Tough call. I'm glad I don't have to make it.

Yep. If the Yanks and Sox split these final 2 games and end up tied, and both in the playoffs, the Yankees get the division due to better head to head.
Cleveland losing today means they can't catch the Yankees if they win, but Cleveland and the Sox could still tie pending tomorrow's games.

yes it is. If the Yanks and Red Sox tie at the end of the year, The Yanks get the AL East title by virtue of winning the season series against the Sox.

The way I look at it and it frustates me that Sox don't do this is that you play most of the game high OBP style and then in the 7-9 innings when you are +/=/- 1 run from your opponent, manufacture a run and get than guy from second home at any cost.

That would be correct, because they'd be a game back of the Sox in the wildcard tomorrow. If the Sox win tomorrow, they can't catch the Sox. And the Yankees win the tiebreaker of a 2 way tie. If the Sox lose tomorrow, well the Yankees win the division anyways.
